Minute Key Introduce
In the bustling metropolitan areas of Michigan, convenience is often king, and for simple tasks like key duplication, services have evolved to meet this need for speed and accessibility. Minute Key is a company that operates automated, self-service kiosks, offering users in Southfield, and across the wider Detroit metro area, a quick alternative to a traditional, full-service locksmith shop. Located strategically within retail partners, the kiosk at 28650 Telegraph Rd provides an option for customers who are already running errands at the location, allowing them to copy a key in a matter of minutes without needing staff assistance.
The primary function of the Minute Key kiosk is automatic key duplicating. It is an ideal solution for residents, renters, and small business owners in the Michigan area who need immediate, functional copies of common keys. The self-service nature means that the duplication process is often available outside of standard business hours, generally aligning with the hours of the host store—a major benefit for those with busy schedules. The machine promises fast, working keys, and customers frequently confirm that the duplicated keys "worked perfectly and they were made quick," highlighting the primary strength of the service: speed and functionality.
However, Michigan users should note that the experience with these self-service kiosks can come with a few notable points of caution, primarily revolving around billing clarity and customer service documentation. While the technology is designed for speed, a significant amount of user feedback points to misleading promotional language, specifically regarding "buy X, get Y free" deals. Customers report being "deceived" or "overcharged" due to confusing prompts that may apply a charge without the user's clear awareness, or restrict the 'free' offer to multiple copies of the exact same key, rather than multiple different keys being copied during one transaction. Furthermore, the lack of a physical receipt and documented issues with emailed receipts arriving can create complications, especially for professionals like remodelers needing reimbursement for client work.
In summary, Minute Key in Southfield is an excellent option for rapid, reliable key cuts for standard residential and office needs, delivered directly into the hands of the user. For Michiganders who prioritize speed and self-service, this kiosk is a convenient tool. However, it is essential to proceed with caution, pay close attention to the billing screen for accurate charges, and be aware that obtaining a clear, reimbursable receipt may require immediate follow-up with customer support rather than relying solely on the email option.
The Minute Key kiosk is strategically placed within a host retail location, making it extremely convenient for Southfield residents and those driving through the Telegraph Road corridor to access.
- Address: 28650 Telegraph Rd, Southfield, MI 48034, USA. This address typically corresponds to a major retail store, such as a large hardware or grocery chain, where Minute Key machines are frequently installed near the front entrance or customer service desk.
- Accessibility: The location on Telegraph Road is a high-traffic area, easily accessible from major roads in the Southfield and Detroit suburbs. Its placement within a retail environment means it offers abundant parking and can be accessed while running other daily errands.
- Operating Hours: The self-service kiosk's availability is generally tied to the hours of the host store, which in this commercial corridor can be as expansive as 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM on weekdays, and similar hours on weekends. This extended availability is a core benefit for the local community.
Minute Key’s primary service is automated, self-service key duplication, focusing on common key types. This process allows users to insert their key and receive a duplicate quickly.
- Standard Key Copying:
- Duplication of the most common residential (house) and office keys.
- This includes frequently used blanks for building access and interior doors.
- Building Key Copying:
- Service for general building access keys, such as apartment building entrances, storage units, or communal area access.
- Office Key Copying:
- Keys for typical office doors, cabinets, and desks.
- Important Note on Additional Services: While general categories are listed, the machine's primary function is only duplication. The kiosk's automated system does not perform full locksmith services such as:
- Lock installation or repair.
- Advanced security key creation (e.g., restricted keyways).
- Transponder chip programming for modern automotive keys.
The appeal of using the Minute Key kiosk in Southfield rests on its unique blend of technology and convenience for local Michigan users.
- Unmatched Speed and Convenience: Keys are duplicated automatically and dispensed within minutes, often in less time than it takes to get assistance from a traditional counter. This is the top reason Michigan locals choose this service.
- Automatic Key Duplicating: The fully self-service machine guides the user through the process, requiring no staff interaction, which is perfect for introverted customers or those in a rush.
- Extended Service Availability: Being located inside a major retailer, the kiosk is available during the store’s extended hours, making it accessible early morning, late evening, and on weekends, far beyond the typical 9-to-5 locksmith schedule.
- Reliable Key Functionality (Once Cut): Many customers report that the keys, once cut, "worked perfectly," indicating a high success rate for the basic duplication process.
- Caution on Promotions and Documentation: While a highlight is speed, a key consideration is the process. Customers must be vigilant as promotional offers (like "buy 2 get 1 free") are often restricted (e.g., all copies must be of the same key) and may lead to unexpected charges. Furthermore, the electronic receipt process can be unreliable, which is a major drawback for business users or those needing official reimbursement.
Since Minute Key is a self-service kiosk, direct contact for technical or customer service issues is managed centrally, not locally at the machine. Local support for issues like billing or missing receipts should use the provided central contact information.
- Address (Kiosk Location): 28650 Telegraph Rd, Southfield, MI 48034, USA (Located inside a partner retail store).
- Phone (Central Customer Service): (561) 802-1629.
- Mobile Phone (Alternative Central Number): +1 561-802-1629.
For Southfield and metro Detroit residents, the Minute Key kiosk at 28650 Telegraph Rd is unequivocally worth choosing when your need is for the immediate, rapid duplication of a standard house, office, or simple building key. If you are already running an errand at the host store and want a quick, "while-you-wait" key copy, this machine is efficient and delivers functional keys.
The decision to use this service is best framed around a trade-off: speed and convenience versus personal assistance and administrative certainty. You gain significant time savings and scheduling flexibility by using the automatic key duplicating system. This is a massive plus for the typical busy Michigander. The negative trade-off, however, is the lack of a human intermediary. This machine-only interaction can lead to frustration regarding billing and documentation. Users must be exceptionally careful when navigating the on-screen promotions and pricing structure to avoid being "overcharged" due to misunderstandings about multi-key deals. They should also be prepared to follow up diligently via email or phone if an electronic receipt is required for reimbursement, as the delivery of emailed receipts has been unreliable for some customers.
In short, Minute Key is a valuable tool in the local Michigan key duplication market, perfect for fast, non-complex key needs. If your job involves a sophisticated lock, a restricted keyway, or if an official, immediate paper receipt is absolutely essential for your finances, a traditional locksmith may be a more appropriate choice. For quick copies of the keys you use every day, the Southfield Minute Key offers unmatched speed and is a great solution—provided you exercise caution on the billing screen and understand its self-service nature.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The keys are great but the machine said there was 2 extra free keys but instead it added the second key to my bill without showing me that I was being charged. I winded up with 4 keys (excessive), when I thought (as the machine said), Buy 2 get one free. I was overcharged and was deceived about the second non free charge.
June 13 · Ginger AleNeeded some keys copied while at Lowes. I couldn't find anyone to assist so I used the self service Minute Key machine. I had 2 keys to copy. The sticker on the machine said buy 2, get 1 free. I was hoping to get 2 copies of one key and 1 copy of the other for free. That was not possible. It had to be 3 of the same key.Since I am a Remodeler, I wanted to use my Lowes LAR card to pay for the keys as they were for a client. The machine did not accept the LAR card so I used my personal credit card with the plan to be reimbursed by my employer. The machine did not print a receipt so it asked for an email address to send the receipt to. I provided the company email address. The receipt never arrived, but the request to take this survey did. I won't get reimbursed by my company without the receipt. The keys worked perfectly and they were made quick, but disappointed with the misleading stickers on the machine and lack of receipt.
August 16 · Debbie AliottaI called for service twice. This was for a vending machine. True enough I did not know the brand of my machines, however, I never got a follow up call to say yes or no they could not fix them, after two phone calls. Deemed unreliable. Most vending machines name are on the inside, I lost my keys, and this just made me mored stressed. Would not recommend.
April 06 · Leslie AmmonsIt made my keys very quickly and they fit perfectly in the doors!. However I did have a problem with one key but idk if it was me or the machine lol. Eventually it ended up copying the key and it all worked out.
November 07 · Krizz DI only used this machine because I got tired of waiting for someone at Lowes to show up to make the keys for me at their machine. Minute Key is a very slow machine and very expensive. However the keys did work. So eh... ok I guess.
